Project summary:

A custom made exhaust system was needed to vent byproducts of combustion in a boiler's lab. This was an indoor lab where large commercial gas fired boilers were being tested. It was vital for any toxins to be removed from the room to ensure safety of the personnel.

Challenges:

The exhaust system had to be built such that it could adapt to different boiler products. It also had to be built in a way that it could remove flue gases from the unit under test, a boiler, without assisting the blower onboard the boiler. This was to ensure integrity of the test results reflecting the performance of the boiler.

End Result:

With the help of one our contractors, a custom made exhaust system was built with three different hoods, one for each test station. Each hood was equipped with ON/OFF dampers. The three channels were all fed to a large roof top exhaust blower controlled with a VFD. A barometric damper was also installed upstream of the blower to ensure the blower always has adequate pressure.

Test personnel could control the capacity of the exhaust blower using the VFD. This was vital to ensure that while the exhaust blower removes flue gases from the boiler under test, it does not assist the boiler blower.
